Following the tips on Gucci zippers of our ‘Ultimate Real vs. Fake Gucci Bag Guide’, we now continue with the Gucci lining. While not as strict as the other details, it’s worth being familiar with it.
Over the years, Gucci has produced different linings to go with their bags. The general rule of thumb is that the lining’s color must complement the exterior body. For instance, a brown GG monogram canvas bag must have a brown lining.
Nevertheless, this rule may be broken if you have a patterned lining (horsebit, flora, etc.), or recent Frida Giannini, Alessandro Michele or Sabato de Sarno bags having a cream lining.
For example, you see newer bags especially leather ones having a cream colored, thick lining inside. Just look at the example of an authentic Gucci Soho bag below:
But in a lot of Gucci purses on eBay, Poshmark, especially from years ago and the common ones, here are the linings.
Gucci has also used the diamante lining in some of its bags. we have seen this diamante lining on nylon canvas hobo bags sold on eBay.
The 12-square point print is also an on-off theme in the house’s collections. This is also another lining used by Gucci. Though not exactly a GG monogram bag, it is a signature G monogram fabric.
This type of lining is usually seen in bags with plain exteriors (for example, heavy cotton canvas or nylon canvas material).
Like the diamante lining above, the inside also became an exterior component of a bag. An example is from the Gucci Resort 2018 collection. This G checkerboard pattern was patented by Gucci in March 29, 1975, specifically Patent #012936. As mentioned in this post, nylon canvas bags also usually use this lining woven with Gucci in parts:
The vintage Gucci Accessory Collection is infamous for having a lining that breaks down through time. It becomes powdery and may be a nuisance if unchecked.
In these two photos below, you will see an intact and scraped Gucci Accessory Collection bag. When buying vintage GAC purses on Ebay, make sure to ask the seller about the condition of the lining.
As not all vintage bags belong to the GAC, here are a couple of examples of monogram canvas linings.
Next in this ‘Ultimate Real vs. Fake Gucci Bag Guide’ series, we will be discussing the seams of Gucci bags.
